Wild Brown Bear, Kuhmo Finland
NEWSLETTER 2011-2012!
The past year, 2011 has been the best as far as photographing and watching the bears, wolves, wolverines and white-tailed eagles is concerned. All these animals have visited the cabin area regularly almost every evening and night.
From the 10th of April until the 5th of October we have seen at least 20-25 different bears and up to 8 bears during one evening. The probability to see at least one of these animals has been between 80 to 100% depending on the month.
We have had the wolverines, up to 4 different individuals at the same time. The probability to see these animals was between 60 to 80% depending also on the month.
We have had a pack of 4 to 6 wolves and during one evening one could see up to 3 at the same time. The possibility to see a wolf is about between 40 to 80% depending on the month.
The best time to see these animals is September, when you also can hear their howling nearly every evening.
During 2012 we are going to start the photographing of wolves and wolverines early in the spring and the suitable time is from the 25th of February until the 10th of April.
The spring is also the best time to see and to take photos from different Eagles species.

Bear and wolverine photography in April and May during snow time

You can start photographing even as early as in the middle of April. All depends on, how does the spring proceed. At this time big male bears wake up and are very hungry after their long fast. So they begin to arrive, first at night, but quite soon also in sufficient light and so you have a possibility to take your pictures on snow.
Frost at night and hard snow help the bears and wolverine to move easier. At first they are very timid, but dare later come even at the daytime. We need silence, if we want pictures. In addition to the bears and wolverines you have a good chance to take pictures from ravens, white-tailed eagles and some hawks. The best time to see an eagle is the springtime and the best way to photograph the raven is spring, when we have still snow.
Female bears with cubs and younger bears wake up later in spring.
At the same time with bears also wolverines are moving and searching for food.
They visit the feeding place 4-6 times a week either at the daytime or at night.
The best time to take pictures from bears or wolverines on snow is from 10.4-15.5, but the spring and the weather may vary every year.
In spring it may snow, nights can be frosty and it gives you a chance to take pictures in backlight, when steam is to be seen from bear`s mouth. At that time you can also photograph the blue scenery.
A wolverine or a bear on the snow is a new vision, which is use trying.
At that time also the full moon (18th April 2011) and even The Northern Light are possible.
Snow time gives more light and different pictures than taking pictures in summertime.
When snow disappears, weather becomes warmer and so the female bears with cubs and also younger bears start to visit the feeding place.
About in the middle of May starts the rut time. Big male bears are after the females and visit only occasionally in the feeding place.
Then the females with cubs, younger bears and even wolverines dare come to eat.
The rut time is over in one month and after that also those big males get back to eat.
In Northern Finland we have light enough to take pictures from the 1st of June till the end of July. Then, especially in July most bears come to eat even early in the evening and some of them leave the place until in the morning, when sun is rising.
You can, if you are lucky, see also the wolverine, which is moving very carefully among the bears.
A wolf has been seen about once a year.
The cabins number 1- 6,7 and 14 are the best places to photograph the wolverine, because from there you can get close.
During the summer the grass gives the green scenery and the plants on the swamp give startle to your pictures and from late of June to the early days of July the swamp is quite white because of the hare`s tail cotton grass.
In August the day is shorter and the bears start to prepare to the wintertime and add their eating. Foggy nights, which you can see also earlier in July, increase because of the cold nights and then it is a good time for special pictures fulfilled with the fog.
The scenery is turning more and more colourful.
It is the best time for good pictures. At that time the bears are quite fat and they have an excellent fur and, when the scenery is quite colourful, you have a good chance to get good results.
All seasons, when the bears are awake are suitable for photographing, but the finest pictures you get either in spring, when there is snow or in autumn, when you can see the most handsome bears and wolverines in the very colourful scenery.
Wild Brown Bear is the best place for photographers, who will take pictures in clean scenery, from various directions, pictures in short distance, bears near the water, maybe swimming and moving f.eg at foggy night or the best place for photographers, who enjoy of backlight.
You can choose your cabin. Just tell us, what are you willing to photograph and we can show you the best place to do it.
We have tried to save our landscape and scenery as natural as possible.
